What Is Aquaform® Technology in Clariti 1 Day and How Does It Work?

Aquaform® Technology is the moisture and comfort mechanism used in CooperVision's Clariti 1 Day daily disposable lenses — the same foundational technology used in the Biofinity monthly lens family, here applied to a daily wear format.

What Aquaform® Technology Is

Aquaform® Technology modifies the fundamental chemistry of the lens material — in Clariti 1 Day, this material is Somofilcon A silicone hydrogel. Rather than applying a surface coating or embedding a separate wetting agent, Aquaform® creates natural wettability throughout the lens material by combining silicone and hydrophilic (water-loving) components during the manufacturing process. The result is a lens where water molecules are chemically attracted and bound throughout the matrix — from core to surface — without relying on a coating that could degrade through blinking or handling.

Why This Matters for a Daily Disposable

A lens that starts the day comfortable but becomes progressively drier by the afternoon does not fully meet the expectations of a premium daily disposable. Aquaform® Technology's naturally wettable material maintains consistent surface hydration throughout the single daily wear period — supporting comfort from morning insertion through to evening removal. Somofilcon A has a water content of 56%, contributing to an initial comfortable feel.

Oxygen Delivery

Somofilcon A with Aquaform® Technology delivers a Dk/t of 86 — significantly higher than standard hydrogel daily lenses and well within the range supporting comfortable, healthy daily wear. The silicone hydrogel structure allows oxygen to pass through the lens matrix independent of water content, ensuring healthy corneal oxygenation throughout up to 16 hours of daily wear.
